Head Start Volunteers
Mid Florida Community Services, Inc., Head Start/Voluntary Prekindergarten (VPK) Department
Director: Heidi Rand
Locations: Head Start Centers in Hernando, Sumter and Volusia Counties
Volunteer opportunities are available at all Head Start centers. All community volunteers and Head Start parents must complete a “Volunteer Application” form prior to providing volunteer service. Once the form is submitted by the volunteer, a local background screen and predator scan are conducted. Volunteers who plan to volunteer 40+ hours per month will also be fingerprinted and processed through FDLE and state background checks. Volunteers must also sign a statement of confidentiality and an acknowledgement of the program’s disciplinary practices and child abuse reporting requirements. Once cleared, volunteer service can begin.
Volunteers are needed in the classrooms to assist the teachers with the implementation of children’s activities. Volunteers may also be utilized to provide clerical support in the Family Services or Health Services areas. Individualized training will be provided.
To obtain a ”Volunteer Application,” stop by the front office of any Head Start Center or call one of the main offices at

Family Visitation Center
Family Visitation Center
Director: George Popovich
Project Coordinator: Jerry Childress
Locations: Hernando
Family Visitation Center has volunteer opportunities available for folks to supervise visits between parents and their children. We would welcome any amount of regularly committed time. Volunteering with us does require passing background checks and also requires some fairly comprehensive training before being allowed to sit with a family alone. Sometimes supervision can be emotional, but it can be very rewarding interacting with the families as well.
